We’ve worked hard at Harwigs to be known for our curated selection of wines, not only in Steamboat, but nationwide. Even in all of my years seeing amazing wines move through the restaurant, this was something to remember. The age old saying is, “when opportunity knocks…”. Well, recently, we had the privilege to taste the 1988 Chateau Giscours from Margeaux. This Cabernet Sauvignon based Bordeaux lived up to the billing. What a treat. We sat down in the Harwigs wine cellar and opened and decanted only one half an hour before pouring, this third growth showed splendidly. Scoring only 89 points upon release, we have an excellent example of what time in the bottle can do for a Bordeaux. Once poured, we noticed a touch of orange on the rim with a garnet body. The nose was subtle with leather notes and hints of red currant and cinnamon. On the palate, our experience elevated with elegant, silky textures; soft, dusty tannins, bright acidity and dried fruit. The cinnamon was still present on the layered finish. Many smiles were shared with the realization that we had opened something special. I still have more…
